This morning, because of a problem with live365 I inadvertently got my sound card muted. I knew what had happened when it did, but, as I use elloquence, jaws wasn't saying a word.

If you're using xp:
Press windows+r (for run), type sndvol32 and, after waiting about 3/4 seconds for ensurance sake, press alt+m.

Normally the 'master volume' gets muted, and that's the hotkey to toggle the checkBox.

If that doesn't work, you'll have to tab to every control and press space twice on each;eventually you'll find the right one.

I had the same problem when audiomatic muted it. Coz i was at a bording school, all my roomm8s couldn't help, i had to weight like 13 hours just to get my it teacher to uncheck mute!.
He did point me in the direction of a command line prog that does it, but i haven't been able to find it yet; ill ask himagain.

BEN.

Hey, thanks. I think the sndvol32 solution (though a little flakey if it isn't the master volume that gets turned off) solution is going to work just fine. I tried it last night with the volume turned down (I didn't have the guts to mute the volume) and it worked just fine.

Hi:
Yes, hit Windows key R, type "sndvol32" (without the quotations), and if you tab twice and uncheck that checkbox, that should work also. The checkbox in question is the "mute all" checkbox and, once unchecked, will unmute things.
I hope that was helpful. I hadn't heard about the Windows M solution once inside that dialogue, I'll have to try that should I run into that problem...

Another solution to the problem is a programme called quick mix. With this programme you can save your volume control settings and restore them at any time. They used to have it at my old college. I don't remember at the moment how it works but i think when the volume is down or something is muted you can just have a shortcut key to press it and restore it to where it was.
you can find it at http://www.ptpart.co.uk/quickmix/.
I hope it helps.
